SQL Server 2017 Has Less Than a Year Left. Put the Upgrade in Your 2027 Budget.
Many companies set next year's budget in the fall. If a SQL Server 2017 database sits under your billing, payroll or reporting, this is the year to pay for the upgrade, not the year to find out it was due.

A deadline that lands in the middle of next year's budget
SQL Server 2017 came out in September 2017. If your company installed it for billing, payroll, inventory or reporting, it may have run quietly ever since.
That quiet run has an end date. Microsoft's support for SQL Server 2017 ends on October 12, 2027. That is less than a year away, and it falls right in the middle of the budget year many companies are planning now.
What Microsoft says ends in October 2027
Microsoft's page on products ending support in 2027 lists SQL Server 2017 with an end date of October 12, 2027. It applies to every edition, on Windows and on Linux. Microsoft says that after the end of support it will no longer provide security updates, other fixes, free or paid help, or updates to its online technical content.
Those security updates still matter today. On October 13, 2026, Microsoft released a security update for SQL Server 2017 that addressed 13 listed vulnerabilities. Six of them were described as remote code execution, the kind that can let an attacker run their own code on your server. Updates like that one stop after October 12, 2027.
The same Microsoft page shows Windows Server 2016 reaching end of support even sooner, on January 12, 2027. If your SQL Server 2017 database runs on a Windows Server 2016 machine, you have two deadlines, and the first one is about ten weeks away.
Why waiting for a paid extension is risky
For older versions, Microsoft sells Extended Security Updates. Its own FAQ calls them a last resort paid option and a temporary bridge, not a long term plan. They cover only security fixes rated critical, and they do not include regular technical support.
Right now that program lists SQL Server 2014 and SQL Server 2016. SQL Server 2017 is not on the list. Even for the versions that are covered, Microsoft requires Software Assurance or a subscription license, and servers outside its cloud must be connected to Azure Arc. If a company signs up late, Microsoft bills the missed months in one charge.
Cloud hosting does not make the deadline go away either. Amazon Web Services has told customers running SQL Server 2017 on its RDS service that, starting October 12, 2027, any instance still on 2017 will be upgraded to SQL Server 2022 during its maintenance window. From December 9, 2027, AWS says it will upgrade them regardless of the maintenance window. That is an upgrade on someone else's schedule, without your testing.
You can skip straight to SQL Server 2025
Microsoft supports upgrading SQL Server 2017 directly to SQL Server 2025. Microsoft lists support for SQL Server 2025 until January 7, 2036. One thing to check first is that Web edition is not offered in SQL Server 2025, so Web edition servers move to Standard or Enterprise.
How to plan the upgrade
- 1Make a list of every server running SQL Server 2017, including the ones inside vendor products and the ones in the cloud. Note the edition and what Windows version each one runs on.
- 2Mark which ones also sit on Windows Server 2016. Those need a plan before January 12, 2027.
- 3Ask your software vendors which SQL Server versions they support. Some business applications only certify certain versions.
- 4Pick the target version. For most companies that means SQL Server 2022 or SQL Server 2025.
- 5Copy a production database to a test server, upgrade the copy and have the people who use it every day run their normal reports and tasks.
- 6Write down how long the upgrade took and how you would roll back if something went wrong.
- 7Put the licenses, the hardware or cloud costs and the staff time in your 2027 budget, and pick a date well before October.
What this means for Oklahoma business and IT leaders
An upgrade like this is easier to plan than to rush. If you know today which servers run SQL Server 2017, you can spread the work across the year, test it properly and budget for it once. If you find out next September, you pay for it in overtime and stress. A separate article explains what to do after SQL Server 2016 support ended. Another article explains how data can leave the building with an old server.
Start with the list. It is the step that shows how big the job really is.
At Oklahoma Data Partners, we work only with data and only in Oklahoma. We help companies find every SQL Server they run, test upgrades on a copy first and move their databases to a supported version without surprises. If you want a clear upgrade plan for your 2027 budget, book a consultation.
Key takeaway
Microsoft ends support for SQL Server 2017 on October 12, 2027, and its paid Extended Security Updates program lists only SQL Server 2014 and 2016. List every 2017 server now, test the upgrade on a copy and put the work in your 2027 budget.
